Bourgas is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria, situated on the Black Sea. It has the biggest bay on the Black Sea coast and is an important administrative, transportation and tourist center. The territory is 7750 km2 and has 231,000 inhabitants. Is provides the largest airport in the country, which is the 4th emergency airport on the Balkan peninsula.
Bourgas is a typical representative of the Black Sea resorts that offer summer vacations. Conditions are best in summer because of its location. The average annual maximum temperature is 19.2 degrees Celsius and the average minimum is 9.8 C. Average annual precipitation is 6 days per month.
History dates from the 6th century BC by indigenous inhabitants were the Thracians. During the Middle Ages is known as Pirgos stronghold. Only in the 17th century, the city gets its name Burgas. The great development it achieves in the 20 century, as only during the I-and World War I arrive around 30,000 refugees from Aegean Thrace.
Economic development the city reached after the II-th World War. Developing transport, communications and heavy industry. After 60's of last century significant progress for the fishing and oil industries was achieved, as well tourism. The port Burgas was broadening new terminal (west) was opened.
The greatest development of tourism in Burgas took place between 1980 and 1988, every day during the summer over 10,000 tourist have holidays. The new private hotels began to build only after 1994. The college of Tourism graduate professionals each year to Bulgarian resorts (hotels and restaurants staff) students now receive higher education.
