Ahtopol - a small town and beach resort on the Black sea
Ahtopol with its population of 1 500 people is a small town, situated on a rocky peninsula, only 15 km far from Tsarevo. The peninsula has several tiny shingle beaches separated by rocky headlands, with a much larger sandy one to the north, beyond the rest-home colony. Nowadays Ahtopol is also a beautiful seaside resort with a lovely beach. Hotels in Ahtopol are situated nearby the seaside and provide stunning views and great opportunities for beach holiday. Away from the hustle and bustle Ahtopol hotels present a warm welcome to everyone who prefer summer holidays on gorgeous Bulgarian beach front.
In the outskirts of the town two villages- Brodilovo and Kosti are situated. Both villages are famous because of the fire dancing. This is an ancient ritual bare feet dance, performed on live coals.
First there was an ancient Thracian settlement on this place which has been colonized by the Romans in the 6th c. BC. They called it Peronticus. The Byzantine leader Agaton reconstructed the town and gave it the name-Agatopolis which means “the town of happiness”. Very soon the town was included in the First Bulgarian Kingdom territory. Turks named the town Ahtenbolu.
Remains of the town`s fortress and a fountain with a carved horseman are the only one left from the ancient times. The Assumption Church (“Hram Vusnesenie Gospodne”) and the Yani Monastery are other places of interest.
Walking to the town`s lighthouse and crawling over the nearby rocks next to the quay is very pleasant for people who are romantic.
Eating and drinking-small restaurants, fast food restaurants, bars, cafes, etc. are available. Almost each hotel provide outdoor swimming pool and lobby bar.
